About the USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Calendar

Created in 2007, the USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Calendar represents the United States’ premier off-road cycling circuit.  Held at venues across the U.S., the calendar attracts top-level competitors from around the world and features three distinct calendars in order to offer participants the best events and courses in their chosen discipline annually – cross country, gravity or ultra-endurance. The USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Calendar was designed to provide a more accessible opportunity for top-level events that have not traditionally participated in a national series model and is compatible with a variety of event models in order to offer professional and elite-level athletes across all disciplines of mountain biking regular and consistent opportunities in the United States.  For more information, visit www.usacycling.org, or contact USA Cycling director of communications, Andy Lee at:  alee@usacycling.org .

NEW FOR 2008!

1.       NEW DATE!   Because we have been named the 24 Hour Mountain Bike National Championships in 2009-2010, we have moved our 2008 date to September 20-21.

2.       More Course!   Still the same great roads, the same beautiful forest and the same challenge, but now we have lengthened the course to make our loop almost 15 miles.

3.       BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND!  6 Hour Division!  Want to race solo or with some teammates but don’t want to go for 24 hours?  Start at noon and finish at 6:00pm. Same rules, same course, same fun

4.       NEW YOUTH DIVISION!   Athletes 19 and under have the option of racing 2 laps of the course

The Course

Our course features the best Arizona has to offer.  Set at almost 5000 feet of altitude, the days are warm and the nights crisp and clear.  There is some downhill, some signal track and some fire roads through some of the most beautiful forests that Arizona has to offer.

In 2008 our course will be a 15 mile loop instead of the 10 mile loop we raced in previous years.

About Payson

Go to www.findyourspot.com./report/Payson_az or www.ci.payson.az.us for more information about Payson.

Payson is located in the heart of Arizona amid scenic mountain vistas, verdant forests rivers and mountain meadows.  Payson is one of Arizona’s most charming small communities and is only a 90 minute drive from Phoenix, Arizona.

Payson is renowned for its beauty and the recreational opportunities that abound in the forests surrounding the community.  At an elevation of 5000 feet, Payson enjoys a mild, four season climate.  Payson is located in one of 3 pure ozone belts in the world and is at the edge of the largest stand of Ponderosa Pine in the world.

Payson is a semi-arid climate at a 5000 feet of altitude.  As a result, desert highs are moderated.  Temperatures rarely climb into the 90s and summer nights drop to the low 50s making for great sleeping (or mountain biking) weather.

Payson offers a wide variety of recreational opportunities.  The surrounding Tonto National Forest provided thousands of acres of trails for mountain biking, hiking, camping and picnicking.  Forty miles away is the Salt River Canyon with some of the best white water rafting in the west.  The Mogollon Rim, a 200 mile long escarpment soaring to 7000 feet is one of the natural wonders of the world and is filled with fishing lakes and camping opportunities.

The fun doesn’t stop when moving indoors. The Mazatzal Casino, run by the Tonto Apache Indian Tribe, is Arizona’s “Friendliest Big Casino” in Arizona and was the first casino to pay out a million dollar jackpot in Arizona.

Lodging, Travel and Camping

Payson is a short drive from Phoenix, Arizona.  Flights are plentiful and cheap into the Phoenix airport from all over the country.  Bikes fly free to Tucson Racing events!  Call 800-836-5823 and ask for the Tucson Racing fare.

Directions from Phoenix, Arizona:  Take 202 Loop east.  Take the AZ-87/Country Club Dr. (EXIT 13)  and turn left toward Payson.  The Mazatzal Casino is on the right and the Payson Rodeo Grounds are on the left, just off AZ 87 as you pull into Payson.

Tucson Racing will be offering free camping to all competitors at the Payson Rodeo Grounds.  Although reservations for camping are not necessary, please indicate if you will be camping on your entry form so that we can plan enough spaces.  Camping spots are first/come first served starting Thursday, June 16 at noon.  We will plan for a 15% overage of spaces based on entry form requests for camping.  If the Payson Rodeo Grounds is full, camping is available at numerous spots in and around Payson. Please check back for the campground map and further details.

In addition, there are plenty of motels in Payson and we will be offering discounts at several. Please check back for details.

Rules and Regulations

NOTE:  This may be a rule unique to the Payson Stampede but it is our position that your finish placing is dependent on the number of laps you complete at the end of 24 hours, no matter when you completed your last lap.  We will not make you do an extra lap just so that you cross the finish line between noon and 1:00pm on Sunday.  If you decide that you have raced enough laps at, for example, 6:00am, then that will be the number of laps considered when placing solo riders/teams at the end of 24 hours.

  1. Mandatory pre-race meeting Sat. at 10:30am at the Payson Rodeo Grounds for all Captains and Solo Racers (all racers are encouraged to attend).
  2. Each team must designate a Captain to handle all official matters including the pre-race meeting, picking up registration packets, making sure all team members have completed their appropriate paperwork and signed waivers, etc.
  3. Each team member must sign a waiver.  Race numbers will not be given out for teams until all team members have signed a waiver.  A waiver is available online and may be downloaded.  If a team member cannot make registration then the team captain may turn in a signed waiver along with a copy of that team members driver’s license.
  4. No refunds for any reason at any time.  Solo riders may transfer their entry to another solo rider prior to 30 days before the event.  All team members must be listed on the entry form.  If a member of a team drops out then another athlete may be substituted.   You must notify Tucson Racing of the substitution and the substitute must sign a waiver.  Substitutions made before June 10 will be made free of charge.  After June 10, a $15 late fee will be assessed.
  5. Waiting riders must always check in with the transition official prior to starting their lap. Solo riders must check in with the transition official each time they finish a lap and before they begin their next lap.
  6. Bikes must be dismounted and walked through the transition area.
  7. Timing will be done by CEP TIMING using the AMB timing system. The chip must be worn on the right ankle at all times while competing on the course. Each team will be issued one chip. The chip is to be transferred to the waiting team member when a transition is made.
  8. Each team member and solo rider must complete a minimum of 1 lap. Teams will be penalized a lap for each lap not completed by each member, except in the case of an injury, which must be reported to a race official who will make the final decision.
  9. If a team member cannot complete his/her lap, the team has the option of starting the lap over with a new rider. They will, however, lose the distance and time of the incomplete lap. The replacement racer must check-in with the transition official prior to beginning the lap.
  10. No reverse riding allowed on the course!
  11. Teammates may cannibalize each other's bikes and swap if necessary. Riders may accept mechanical support on the course by any registered racer, but support crews can help only in the transition area or at a campsite.  Landis Cyclery will be available with mechanics in the transition area.
  12. Riders may accept food and water from anyone on the course.
  13. We suggest that each team & solo rider have a support crew of at least 1 or 2 persons who are not racing to assist with various jobs such as organizing transitions, cooking & assisting with mechanical problems.
  14. Toilets are available throughout the weekend. Please use the toilets & not the woods.
  15. You will need all of your own camping supplies.
  16. All riders beginning a lap between 7:00pm and 4:30am will be required to have a primary AND a secondary light source. The primary light source must be at least 4 watts and secured to your bike or helmet. The secondary light source may be a flashlight, penlight or similar lighting system.
  17. It is against the rules for riders to ride with their lights out to save batteries. Riders violating this rule will have their current lap nullified.
  18. Come prepared with completely charged, extra batteries so you can be completely self-sufficient for 24 hours. Be sure to mark your name on your batteries & chargers. Taking someone else's battery will be grounds for disqualification of the entire team.
  19. All federal, state and  local and rules will be in effect, including:
    • No firearms
    • No illegal drugs
    • Dogs must be leashed at all times.  Unleashed dogs and their owners will be banned from the Payson Rodeo Grounds!!!
    • Federal, state and county laws, rules and regulations must be abided by at all times.
  20. Additional Rules and regulations:
    • Only riders officially entered in the event or designated as "Official Course Marshalls" may ride on the designated racecourse.
    • Each rider while racing must wear his/her race number and numberplate.
    • Wearing a buckled helmet is mandatory anytime you are on your bike on the property (not just when you are racing)!
    • All captains must attend the pre-race meeting.
    • Ignorance of any of these rules is not an excuse.
    • Foul riding, unsportsmanlike behavior, or the use of profane or abusive language, are grounds for warning, and/or disqualification of a team or solo rider.
    • Short cutting the course can be grounds for automatic disqualification of the entire team or solo rider. If a racer makes a mistake, and he/she reports it to
the officials before it is discovered, a time adjustment will be made rather than a DQ.
    • Racers riding bicycles have the right of way over racers pushing bicycles. When practical, racers pushing should stay on the least rideable portion of the path when being passed. Riders should say pleasantly, "Track, on your left" or “Track, on your right" when passing other riders.
    • All protests must be made by team captains to an official. Protests may be made during the event and up to 15 minutes after the final results are posted. All protests must be made in a respectful manner to an official. Officials will have the final decision on all protests.
  21. Safety is a priority. If you come across an injured rider or a potentially unsafe situation, you are encouraged to stop and assist.
  22. The Head Official shall have final say in all disputes or questions about rules.
  23. The Race Directors will be given the final decision regarding any occurrence at the event including those not addressed in these rules.

Finish

The race will end at 12 noon on Sunday for all race groups in the 24 hour division.  The finish for the 6 hour division will be 6 hours after the start of that race.  The finish of the 12 hour division will be 12 hours after the start of that race.

Teams and solo riders may stop at any time.  The time and laps completed will be recorded at the time you stopped.   Please note that you do not have to cross the finish line at 12:00 noon on Sunday.  Again, your score is the amount of laps you did in the time you did it in, whenever you chose to stop.

Teams and solo riders finishing a lap before 12 noon may still start another lap, as long as they start before 24:00:00 on the official race clock.   This lap will count with respect to time and laps completed.

The time and number of laps completed by each team or solo will determine their finishing order.

In case of a tie in laps, the team or solo rider who finishes their last lap first will beat those who finish behind them.

A lap is officially finished when the AMB chip passes the lap-counting Checkpoint.
